Farewell Concord Casimir
Concord Casimir, the pierogi-eating, weather-forecasting cat, has sadly passed away.
Casimir, an orange-colored feline, was found as a kitten outside of St. Casimir Church on Cleveland’s East Side in 2013. Shortly after, on Groundhog Day 2014, a new tradition was born. Casimir was provided with a plate of pierogies on the holiday and observed. The way he ate his pierogies would determine what his forecast for the remainder of the winter would be. For example, in 2023, Casimir flipped his pierogi around during his annual prediction meal, meaning there would be a “flip- flop” end of winter, with alternating warm and cold temperatures, and in 2025, he made a mess out of his meal indicating that the end of that winter would be a “mess.”
In recent years, Casimir even gained the attention of prominent pierogi maker Mrs. T’s Pierogies, who sent supplies for his prediction meal.
According to his handler John Niedzialek, Casimir passed away “with the calm and love he lived his whole life” on July 22nd.
Casimir was definitely a unique prognosticator and we here at Countdown to Groundhog Day will miss learning about his yearly predictions.
