Countdown to Groundhog Day

Uni

Forecaster Type: Taxidermy mount Groundhog
Location: Myerstown, Pennsylvania, United States
Description: Uni, a taxidermy mounted groundhog, has been predicting the weather since 1981 in a celebration organized by Union Kanaal Grundsau Lodsch No. 17 of Eastern Lebanon County (Nummer Siwwezeh am Union Kanaal). Early on Groundhog Day, Uni is placed on a boat in the Tulpehocken Creek, once part of the Union Canal, and is pulled down the water by members of the Groundhog Lodge. After his voyage on the creek, one of the members of the Lodge interprets Uni's prediction in Pennsylvania Dutch, and another member translates the Pennsylvania Dutch into English, letting the crowd know whether Uni saw his shadow or not. If Groundhog Day falls on a Sunday, Uni gives his prediction on the day before, since he is a church-going groundhog.
