A groundhog named Queen Charlotte provided a Groundhog Day prediction at the Charlotte Nature Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, from 2002 to 2021.
During her Groundhog Day event, if Queen Charlotte saw her shadow, that indicated that there would be six more weeks of winter. Otherwise, there would be an early spring.
During Charlotte's Groundhog Day celebration there was often entertainment like puppet shows, crafts, and refreshments.
The museum solicited suggestions for the groundhog's name, and chose the most common out of hundreds of entries.
There were multiple Queen Charlottes over the years. The most recent Charlotte retired before Groundhog Day 2022 and sadly passed away in August of that same year. There are no immediate plans for a replacement Charlotte.
Before Charlotte, there was a similarly named groundhog called Miss Lottie (a nickname for Charlotte) who provided Groundhog Day predictions from 1995 until 2000.
