On Nantucket, a quahog named Quentin has his shell cracked open, usually by the Nantucket Harbormaster, on Groundhog Day, in order to predict the severity of the rest of winter. If Quentin squirts left, there will be six more weeks of winter. If Quentin squirts right there, will be an early spring. After his prediction, Quentin is eaten, meaning there is a new Quentin every year the event is held. This tradition began sometime in the early 1980s, ran dormant for a few years starting in the mid 2010s, and was revived in 2023.
