Manitoba Merv, a groundhog puppet, has been providing a Groundhog Day prediction since the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre opened in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1993.
If Merv, who has also been referred to as a gopher-like golf club cover, comes out of his den and sees his shadow on Groundhog Day, there will be six more weeks of winter. If Merv does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring.
Besides Merv's prediction, there are usually other activities to celebrate the holiday, such as crafts, games, wetland presentations, and snowshoeing.
Merv has a girlfriend named Manitoba Marie who has made appearances with Merv in the past.
February 2nd, is also World Wetlands Day, which the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre celebrates.
