Malverne Mel

Malverne Mel is a groundhog who has been predicting the weather on Groundhog Day in Malverne, New York, since 1996.

If Mel sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If Mel does not see his shadow, then there will be an early spring. Mel whispers his prediction to the village mayor through a trumpet-style earpiece.

During the event, live music is played, and hot chocolate and treats are available to the crowd.

A song was written for Mel by local singer-songwriter Stuart Markus called "The Ballad of Malverne Mel". Markus performed this song at the event for over a decade.
