A prairie dog named Lander Lil has been providing Groundhog Day predictions since the 1980s.
For many years, Lander Lil was an actual live prairie dog, giving her first prediction at the Lander Centennial in 1984.
Every year, a different prairie dog would be dubbed Lander Lil and observed on Groundhog Day.
In 1994, a bronze prairie dog statue of Lander Lil was created by sculptor Beverly Paddleford and installed near the post office. At some point after this, the statue replaced the living Lil as the Groundhog Day prognosticator.
If Lil sees her shadow on Groundhog Day, there will be 5 more feet of snow. Otherwise spring is right around the corner.
If was decided that Lil would be female due to Wyoming's history with women's suffrage, being the first state to grant women the right to vote, and it's motto as "The Equality State."
