Sunset Sam was the name of a guinea pig who provided a Groundhog Day prediction in Sunset City, Utah, starting in 1995 until the early 2020s.
If Sunset Sam saw the sunset on Groundhog Day, that means there would be a long winter (at least six more days). Otherwise, there would be an early spring.
The tradition was started by Brent Andrews as a means of helping his family deal with a tragedy and giving them something to look forward to.
Eventually the event was taken over by the city and incorporated into the annual Sunset Sam Winterfest, which eventually did away with the prediction, but kept Sam as a mascot.
There were many Sams over the years.
