Essex Ed was a groundhog at the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, New Jersey, who predicted the weather on Groundhog Day from 1997 until his retirement in 2021.
A small ceremony was usually held involving Ed's prognostication, which was attended by a few hundred people and the local media. If Ed saw his shadow during the ceremony, that meant there would be a long winter. If not, there would be an early spring.
Ed would occasionally predict the winner of the Super Bowl if Groundhog Day fell before it.
Ed was superseded by his niece Lady Edwina of Essex.
