Sand Mountain Sam is a possum who has predicted the weather every Groundhog Day since 1993 in Albertville, Alabama, for radio station 105.1 WGSB.
Instead of a groundhog, the station wanted an animal that was indigenous to North Alabama, so a possum was chosen.
Every year, a new Sam is caught for the ceremony and then released back into the wild after they make their prediction.
A small ceremony is held in the radio station parking lot and broadcast over the air, where the winner of the station's Possum Queen contest reads Sam's prediction.
If Sam sees their shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If not, spring will be early.
