Sylvia, The Apex Armadillo

Sylvia is an armadillo who has been providing a prognostication every Groundhog Day in Apex, North Carolina, since 2021. Apex, which has the motto "The Peak of Good Living," is a suburb of Raleigh. Sylvia is the brainchild of Mayor Jacques Gilbert, who was looking for an opportunity to introduce a Groundhog Day ceremony to Apex after his election. Unable to obtain a groundhog, Gilbert decided to use an armadillo. Since 2023, Sylvia has been providing her prediction at one of the Apex elementary schools. If Sylvia sees her shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If Sylvia does not see her shadow, there will be an early spring. Sylvia is provided by Animal Edventures Sanctuary, where she lives when not prognosticating.
